Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

At Longmoor, we believe that every child is unique and special and has a valuable contribution to make to the life of our school. It is our intention to promote Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development through every aspect of a child‟s time at Longmoor. The values that we uphold will be evident in:

 the decisions made at our school;
 the quality of the relationships between everyone at Longmoor;
 the expectations placed on pupils from all backgrounds;
 our commitment to promoting equal opportunities sharing a common citizenship by working and playing together successfully;
 our concern for developing responsibility, initiative and pride in the work of individuals in our school;
 our aim to promote children‟s personal development through a range of appropriate activities.

The spiritual, moral, social and cultural elements of pupils‟ development are inter-related. We have defined them separately for the purpose of this policy, inspection and school self-improvement, but it should not be forgotten that there is much overlap between them, not least in respect of spirituality and its links to pupils‟ attitudes, morals, behaviour in society and cultural understanding.

Community Cohesion is about working towards a society where there is a sense of belonging by all communities. 

Where the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and valued. Similar life opportunities are available to all. 

Strong and positive relationships exist and continue to be developed in the workplace, in schools and in the wider community.

Part of the responsibility we have is

• To raise awareness and understanding of cultural diversity both locally and globally.
• To value others – children, staff, families, friends and the rest of the world.
• To Recognise commonalities between all people.
• To ensure that all children gain equal life opportunities.

There are four areas of community -

• the school community – the children and young people it serves, their parents, carers and families, the school’s staff and governing body, and community users of the school’s facilities and services
• The community within which the school is located – the school in its geographical community and the people who live or work in that area. 
• The UK community 
• The global community 


At Longmoor we do lots of work to promote the diversity of our children and the people in the surrounding area.

• Within the school community we welcome parents and carers into the school and value their feedback. We give our children as much opportunity as possible to work together and learn from each other.

• We regularly invite guests from the community to share their skills, expertise and knowledge with the children and staff. These can range from craft activities to celebrate different cultural festivals to parents coming in to teach us cooking from different countries and cultures.

• We learn about different areas of the UK community and compare it to our own. We also look at the lives of people in different localities to our own and look at how they differ.

• We learn about aspects of life in different countries and find common ground between the people that live there and ourselves. One of our aims is to have a link with a school in a country which is significantly different to our own. We have a link with a charitable organisation called The Footprints Orphanage, in Kenya. http://www.footprintsorphanage.com/

We are always on the look-out for new and exciting activities and learning opportunities for the local community to share with us
