Lifelong Learners

Welcome

ROBINS (Mrs Spilsbury and Miss Lewis)

Welcome to the Robins class page

Welcome to the Elmers! Miss Lewis and Mrs Spilsbury share the week's teaching in our class and Mrs Burton is our TA each morning. Miss Lewis has worked at Longmoor for 11 years and this is her third year in year 1! Mrs Spilsbury joined Longmoor almost two years ago but is currently having a lovely time on maternity leave.

Welcome back to everyone after the summer holidays. Hopefully you have all had a wonderful break and a fantastic time doing all sorts of fun of fun things. There are lots of exciting things to look forward to during the new term including a seasons day on Friday 20th September.

In our topic lessons this half term we will be asking ourselves "Why are there so many leaves on the floor?"

We will be observing seasonal changes, comparing different types of weather and even becoming weather reporters by recording our very own weather forecasts.

Some of our key questions are:

-Why does it get cold in winter?

-What is special about spring?

-Why do we wear less clothes in summer?

-How will we create our own weather report summary?

-How was William Morris inspired by the seasons?

Take a look below at some of the things we've been up to!

Homework

Children will bring home creative tasks to be completed over the  term. Children will have a choice of three tasks to be completed over a two week period. The idea is for children to select one and produce a quality piece of homework to be shared with the class during the homework sharing sessions. There is a homework display in our classroom where children, parents and staff can look at all the wonderful work created and be proud of their hard work. We look forward to seeing lots of wonderful pieces of work on display!

There is also a maths focus for each week; please work on the maths skills shown in the homework sheet as this will be a focus for children in maths lessons during the week. If you need another copy of the homework tasks then please download one from the link below.

Spellings and reading

The children will bring home spellings to learn to spell each week. Tests will be on a Thursday so please practise the spellings with your child each week. And of course, please read regularly at home- if your child brings in their reading record signed to say they have read their book they will be allowed to change it.

Please check out our reading journey display in the classroom to see where your child is. For every 40 reads they compete at home, they will receive a book prize from Mrs Dainty!

Planning

Have a look at the some of the activities we have planned for this term

Medium term planning

PE is on a Tuesday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor). Please make sure your child does not wear jewellery on these days, in particular earrings (studs) should be removed if your child cannot do this themselves. Please can your child bring in warm clothes and trainers as the weather begins to get cold!

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is the new reward system that we are using at Longmoor. The teachers are able to give out points for a variety of good behaviours around school.

You should have received a code to allow you to see how many points your child has got and what they were for. If you have not got it yet, please let me know and I will arrange for another one to be sent to you.

You can access the website at www.classdojo.com or download the app on Android or Apple phones and tablets

Things to do at home

The T-rex has been asking some very silly questions, can you read and answer them?

Use your knowledge of tens and units to help out this poor dinosaur.

Have a look at our helpful hints leaflets, with some ideas for games and activities to encourage your child's literacy and numeracy skills. The Year 1 leaflet gives an idea of our end of year expectations. There is also a spelling list with high frequency and tricky words that your child is expected to be able to spell by the end of year 2.

WHISPER - Anonymous Reporting Tool

Sometimes it is really hard to tell an adult if you feel like you are being bullied. That is why we have subscribed to WHISPER. It is an anonymous reporting tool which allows you or your child to report any incidents of bullying and cyber bullying in confidence.

Click on the web link below to fill in a report. It will then be emailed to Miss Hughes (Online Safety Coordinator). Messages are checked as often as possible. In order to resolve issues effectively and promptly, please include your name. This will be kept in the strictest of confidence.

If you have any concerns or worries about your child regarding online safety and would like further advice, please contact Miss Hughes or Mr Lyons, the school's online safety co-ordinators or speak to Mrs Dainty, Headteacher.
