  • The Gardening Club.

    Gardening Club.

    The gardening club meets every Wednesday evening straight after school. There has been a huge amount of work to do on our school allotment. Luckily we have lots of adults to help.

    We weed, plant, water and find out all about the different herbs that we grow and what we could cook with them.

    It is lots of fun and at the end of each session we get to pick and eat the fruit.

    So far we have had rhubarb, strawberries and raspberries.

    Delicious!

    Numeracy Day 23rd June 2015

    Thankfully the rain stayed away, on Tuesday, as the whole school enjoyed a fun filled day of maths out on our wonderful field.

    Children in year 1 and 2 and year 3, 4, 5 and 6 were mixed up and put in groups, as they experienced learning maths with different teachers and different age groups.

    We had counting, measuring, time, symmetry, finding angles, calculations, estimating, shape, capacity, data collection and every kind of maths you could imagine was taking place!

    It was a fantastic day of maths and working together across the school.

    Well done, children, you were amazing!

  • Intra- School Football Tournament

    KS2 Football Tournament.

     

    Last week on Thursday and Friday lunch times, Mr Bunhejee started the intra- school football tournament.

    Each day there were two matches, each lasting 10 minutes. The rules were that each team had 6 players, at least 2 girls and a substitute.

    There was a fantastic atmosphere, with lots of children and staff coming along to offer their support.

    The children showed lots of skills, with super striking and wonderful goal keeping.

    It was so popular after the first matches, that two new teams joined the competition.

    The finals will be held on Saturday 11th July at the Longmoor Summer Fair.

    Don't miss out, come along and join in the fun.

    Well done to everyone that organised a team.

    I am looking forward to watching more games.

  • Friesland Performing Arts Morning.

    Friesland Performing Arts Morning.

    On Thursday June the 4th, Year 5 children visited Friesland school for a performing arts morning. What a fantastic and fun filled morning we had! All of the children took part in Dance, Drama and Music lessons with other local primary schools. This was an excellent opportunity for the children to meet others from local schools and work on teamwork activities with them.

    In Dance the children shrugged their shoulders and showed some attitude to embrace the style of street dance and were fantastic at following the choreography led by Mrs Yorke. Great moves year 5!

    The morning taught the children about the 5 Cs (confidence, communication, cooperation, concentration and creativity), skills which the children were able to develop throughout the morning.

    In drama the children applied these skills by working in pairs and in small teams to use their bodies to create letter shapes and words. The children all presented these with great confidence and creativity!

    The children were super excited by the Music lesson, as they used the Apple Mac laptops to generate their own pop songs!

    We certainly left Friesland feeling inspired by the 5 Cs and will continue to develop these skills at Longmoor Primary School.

  • First Aid Training for Year 5 and 6 Children.

    Y5/6 First Aid Training

     

    Years 5 and 6 have had three hours of First Aid training this week.  It was a very informative course that discussed situations that require medical assistance and how we can assess the situation and then follow first aid procedures.  The course covered:

    • Communication and casualty care

    • First aid kit

    • Primary survey

    • Recovery position

    We began the training in the school hall where we learnt the ‘Primary Survey’ that is carried out with every casualty.  After discussing the procedure to follow, we got into pairs and practised, one of us was unconscious and the other was the first aider and then we swapped.

    FIRST AID: PRIMARY SURVEY

    DANGER – check for danger, trying to find out what has happened   YES / NO?

    RESPONSE – approach at their feet, speak to the casualty (introduce self and say come to help), go to head (command of ‘open your eyes’), tap casualty on the shoulder and inform them you are doing that)  YES / NO?

    IF WE DID GET A RESPONSE THEN WE CAN STOP THE PRIMARY SURVEY!

    IF NOT…SHOUT FOR HELP!

    AIRWAY – tilt the head back using hand on forehead and two fingers under the chin

    BREATHING – check for ten seconds, looking at the stomach to see if it is going up and  down, listening for the breathing on the side of your face  YES / NO?

    • IF CASUALTY IS BREATHING, CHECK FOR BLEEDING THEN PUT THEM IN THE RECOVERY POSITION:
    • PUT ARM CLOSEST TO YOU UP AND OUT (STOP POLICEMAN POSITION)
    • TAP WITH BACK OF HAND DOWN SIDE OF BODY TO CHECK FOR KEYS ETC AND REMOVE
    • TAKE OFF GLASSES / EARRINGS CAREFULLY
    • TAKE HAND FROM OTHER SIDE ON SIDE OF FACE AND PUT YOUR HAND ON TOP OF IT, WITH OTHER HAND BEND UP LEG THAT IS AWAY FROM YOU
    • USING AS A LEVER, ROLL PERSON TOWARDS YOU, MAKE SURE SHOULDERS COME FORWARD AND LEGS ARE IN RUNNING PERSON POSITION
    • ENSURE MODESTY (PULL CLOTHES DOWN ETC)
    • OPEN UP AIRWAY AND CHECK FOR BREATHING FOR TEN SECONDS ON BACK OF HAND
    • CPR
    • ALWAYS DEAL WITH THE UNCONSCIOUS CASUALTY FIRST!

     

    Then we went back to the classroom and discussed making a 999 emergency call.  We listened to a 999 call so we know what questions the operator asks the caller.  You will call 999 after assessing a casualty using DR ABC.

    These are the questions asked: 

    Which emergency service?  (Police, Ambulance, Fire & Rescue, Coastguard, Mountain Rescue, Cave Rescue)   You can ring 112 which is a European emergency number.  Both numbers are free.

    What’s the problem?  What actually happened?  What’s the address?  What’s the telephone number you’re calling from?  Are you with the patient now?  How old is the patient?  Is the patient conscious, awake?  Is the patient breathing?  Is the patient completely awake?  Is the patient breathing normally?  What part of the patient’s body is injured?  Is there any serious bleeding?  When did this happen?

    We learnt that if you are not sure of the seriousness of the situation then you should call 999 and they will help you out.  It is an offence to fake call 999 or 112 and pretend something has happened. 

    After this we learnt about different situations that we could have to deal with.  This was fainting, asthma attacks and choking.

    FAINTING:  Keep talking to the casualty, get more blood to the head by picking up legs from the feet.

    We watched a clip of a gentleman who had an asthma attack because he was breathing in dust.  In pairs, we completed a sheet about ‘triggers’ for asthma attacks, what we’d see or hear and what treatment we would give.

    ASTHMA:  Sit child on a chair, like they’re riding a horse, with their arms relaxed over the back of the chair.  Try to keep the child calm and relax them.  Give the inhaler to the child if they have one to take one or two puffs.  If it doesn’t work, wait two minutes before they use it again.  This can happen ten times.  If it isn’t working then the child needs to go to the hospital.

    A preventer inhaler is taken daily to prevent an attack.  A reliever inhaler is used when a trigger has triggered off an attack.

    We next watched a video of someone choking when eating.

    CHOKING: Ask the person if they’re choking.  If the person can talk, they can breathe so they haven’t got a full blockage.  If they don’t respond then they are choking.  Ask the person to cough and then give the person up to five back blows with the heel of your hand and up.  If the hazard hasn’t been removed then you can do up to five abdominal thrusts.  From behind the person, link hands underneath the diaphragm and pull in and up, squeezing the air against the blockage.  Back blows and abdominal thrusts can be repeated.

    We have learnt that you do not need a first kit to complete a lot of first aid procedures.  However, it is important to have a first aid kit to help.  A first aid kit is a green box with a white cross on it.  All items need to be in date and not expired. 

    Don was great at informing us about first aid and ensuring that we understood everything clearly.  He always checked our understanding by giving scenarios and asking questions.  We learnt a lot and now feel more confident about first aid.

    Thomas : I have learnt a lot about first aid that I would probably never know or learn.

     

    Daisy-Mai :  After this morning I feel more confident in treating an unconscious person.

     

    Taylor :  This morning was very informative.

     

    Kate :  I now know what should and shouldn’t be in a first aid kit.

     

    It was an excellent morning and the children behaved superbly – as always.

    Year 3 and 4 Netball Tournament

    Well done to Javelle, Katelynn, Holly, Alex, Reeya (Y4), Gabriella, Harriet and Kairell who represented the school fantastically at the English Martyr’s High 5 Netball competition on the 21st May. They competed really well and it was great to see the team play better and better with each game.
