  • Premier Sport Paralympic Goalball.

Sun 24 Jan 2016 Ashleigh - Premier Sport

    Premier Sport Paralympic Goalball.

Over the last 4 weeks, Ashleigh, from Premier Sport has started our 'Road to Rio' experience with some Paralympic Goalball sessions.

Goalball is a team sport designed specifically for blind athletes, originally played in 1946 as a means of assisting the rehabilitation of visually impaired World War II veterans. Goalball quickly grew into a competitive sport and was the first sport to be designed exclusively for disabled players. Teams alternate throwing and rolling the ball from one end of the playing area to the other passing to their team in order to try and score a goal. Players must use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball.

Mr Bunhejee's class have been doing a fantastic job of learning the skills required for the game and have shown a great attitude towards this new and exciting experience.

    Well done.

  • Pop up Planetarium Visits Longmoor.

    Mon 18 Jan 2016 Chelsie-Paige and Lauren

    Planetarium

As soon as we stepped into the hall, we were asked to take off our shoes. Than Mr Allen opened up the planetarium and we clambered in single file, however we had to be quick as the huge dome was deflating.

Inside was epic; it was spacious, warm and dark. It was a bit claustrophobic as there were a lot of people but we soon got used to it. Mr Allen, an astrologer, started by telling us about the perspective of the sun, moon and earth.  He held up a polystyrene ball and said this is earth, he then said the dome was the sun. That was amazing. Who thought the sun was that big? He then held up a pea sized polystyrene ball, he said that was the moon. Who thought the moon was so small! He then told us about the planets orbiting the sun. It was really interesting to find out about the time scale of different planets orbiting. He also told us about the amount of galaxies that exist, there are up to 200 billion galaxies. WOW!

Near the end, it was the best time of the whole experience. Mr Allen placed a constellation “lamp shade” over a torch, this projected what the Romans used to think were the pictures in the sky, and it looked a bit like a dot-to-dot. Then he showed how to remember where the northern star is. He also told us that because we are in England, in the northern hemisphere, we always get to see the northern star unlike the other stars. He then changed the “lamp shade” to one that projected actual stars, we then tried to see if we could see the images we saw before, we could see: a frying pan, a Pegasus, lion, 2 bears and a weird man with sword.

We enjoyed the whole experience it was exciting and fascinating.

  • Build the Loch Ness Monster.

    Tue 12 Jan 2016 J Menzies

    Build the Loch Ness Monster.

On Tuesday 12th January the children in Year 1 and 2, with their  parents had a wonderful time using their imaginations and creativity to construct models of their image of the Loch Ness monster.

The hall was full of people and piles of boxes of every shape and size.

Working in teams, 8 models were built.

Everyone had a great deal of fun, worked well together and used their imaginations.

Mrs Menzies had to judge the top 3 models (which was very difficult) as they were all amazing.

After all of the hard work everyone enjoyed  a Scottish shortbread biscuit, to replenish their energy.

Thank you to all of the parents who came to enjoy learning with their children.

If you want to see more photographs, please visit your child's class page on this website.

Here are some comments from our parents.

'We've loved it, we're sweaty but it has been great fun.'

  • The Big School Bird Watch

    Mon 11 Jan 2016 J Menzies

    The Big School Bird Watch.

Rosalind, from the RSPB came to work with the Year 3 and 4 children on Friday 8th January for 'The Big School Bird Watch'.

She talked to the children about the importance of protecting habitats and monitoring bird populations. They also discussed how healthy our population of mini beasts is as this affects how many birds live in our area.

The children also learned how to identify birds using keys.

All of the children learned a huge amount and enjoyed making feeder, drawing birds, using pastels and using the binoculars.

We look forward to welcoming the RSPB back again later in the year.
