  • The Chicks Return to the Farm.

    Fri 27 Mar 2015 J.Menzies

    Eggucation comes to Longmoor.

In March the Nursery and Reception children have enjoyed working with Eggucation,  a company who bring in to school, eggs from rare breed chickens in an incubator, for the children to learn about new life.

It was very exciting on the 19th March, as the fist chick began pipping (breaking out of their shell.)

Over a couple of days all 6 chicks hatched in reception and the same in nursery. They were wobbly to begin with. The children talked constantly about their new arrivals.

All of the chicks went home with Mrs Roberts for the weekend, then back in to school on Monday, so that the children could watch them grow.

The reception children named their chicks  Gammy, Happy, Scarlet, Flappy, Coffee and Jessie. This was democratic, as all of the children chose a name and they were drawn out of a hat.

It was such a brilliant experience that Mrs Bellingham has already booked for next year.

  • Sports Hall Athletics

    Sports Hall Athletics.

What an afternoon of sporting brilliance!  A team of ten year 5 and 6 pupils went to Wilsthorpe School to compete in the ‘Super 6’ Indoor Athletics Competition.

The first half was field events: speed bounce, chest push, javelin, vertical jump and standing long jump.  Rilee and Daisy-Mai were particularly impressive, scoring the highest or farthest in four out of the five events.  Raj threw an amazing length of 15m 10cm in the javelin.

The second half was track events: 2 x 1 race, 2 x 2 race, 1 x 1 race and a relay with all five boys and five girls taking part.  Liberty and Catherine were speedy runners with Liberty and Daisy-Mai winning their 2 x 1 race and Catherine winning hers.

All of the children: Liberty, Daisy-Mai, Catherine, Jasmine, Angel, Michal, Raj, Max, Rilee and Jack were fantastic, not only in their sporting prowess but also in being great ambassadors for Longmoor Primary School, by behaving impeccably and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

It was an absolute pleasure watching the children cheer each other on and try their best in everything.

  • Westpark Swimming Gala

Thu 26 Mar 2015 Mr Bunhejee

    Westpark Swimming Gala.

Mrs Menzies and Mr Bunhejee had the pleasure of taking a group of eight year 4, 5 and 6 boys and girls to the swimming gala on Wednesday 25th March at West Park Leisure Centre.  They were all super competitive but also showed great team spirit and fair play.

The boys were Lewis and Taylor from year 6 and Judah and Max from year 5. The girls were represented by Liberty and Kate in year 6, Jasmine from year 5 and Holly in year 4.

The team swam very well and finished 4th out of 6 schools. A superb effort.

A particular mention must go to Liberty who finished 2nd in the 25 metre butterfly race, Kate who was 3rd in the 25 metre backstroke and Jasmine who came 3rd in the 25 metre breast stroke.

Well done to the whole team, we were proud of you all.

  • National Quiz Heat

    Tue 24 Mar 2015 Thomas, Year 6

Inter-School National Quiz Championship Heat At Gayton Primary, Littleover.

First we were shown into the hall in which our intellectual battle would take place. Dylan, Javelle, Gabriella and I were confident yet nervous. We then had to answer 30 questions, challenging our knowledge of Art, History, Music and many other topics.

At one point we were leading the competition, our families and Mrs Parsons cheering us on. Only to be knocked down to second place by a group of super brains. Then we faced the final round stocked full of difficult questions. At the end of the hour we finished in third place out of 10.

Afterwards we were then handed our certificates and we left with pride.

We were thrilled to have come third.

  • Art Day at Longmoor

    Thu 19 Mar 2015 J.Menzies

    Art Day at Longmoor.

On Thursday 19th March everyone became an artist for the day. Mrs Clayton (our art coordinator) chose 12 different artists for classes to study, a real mixture of styles were chosen, from Andy Golsworthy to David White.

Three artists also spent the day with us creating wonderful canvases. Everyone learned and practised new skills, from colour mixing to printing with shaving foam and inks. There are certainly some materials we will be ordering after the day.

We hope you enjoy the canvases, which will be on display throughout the school. Can you find all 12 at parent evenings next week.

We had a fabulous day and many children thought it would be a great way to earn a living by being creative.

A huge thank you goes to the PTFA for buying the canvases and paying for the artists for the day.

Gabriella and Harriet from Year 3 said, 'The art day was amazing. We tried new activities that we had never tried before. Our canvas makes us feel proud, because it is fantastic'.

  • Solar Eclipse

    Tue 17 Mar 2015 J.Menzies

    Solar Eclipse

On Friday 20 March 2015, the whole of the UK will be treated to a partial eclipse of the Sun. These are quite rare, and this one will be a major event. That morning, the Moon will pass right in front of the Sun, blotting out up to 90% of its disc. The Sun will look like a crescent instead of a disc, and there’ll be various other things to look for.
However, it is extremely dangerous to just go out and look up. The Sun is so bright that just looking at it can blind you, so you’ll need to prepare beforehand. There are various ways to observe it safely, using both everyday materials and telescopes or binoculars. So read this leaflet to find out what will happen and how you can see all the stages of the event.

Please see the leaflet about viewing the eclipse safely at the bottom of our welcome page.

    Enjoy this natural phenomenum!

  • Comic Relief

    Tue 17 Mar 2015 J.Menzies

    Comic Relief 2015.

On Friday the 13th March Comic Relief took over Longmoor. All of the children and staff wore red, some also had strange faces! We sold 210 red noses, Mrs Menzies had to go and buy an extra 50.

In the afternoon we had a danceathon and everyone got involved. It was a fantastic day and in total we raised £540.90. Amazing.

A huge thank you goes to the School Council for organising the event and to our 4 Sport's Ambassadors for working with the school councillors to lead the danceathon.

Since Comic Relef began, 30 years ago, they have raised over 1 billion pounds to help children and families at home and abroad.

  • Bikeability

    Thu 05 Mar 2015 J Menzies

    Bikeability.

Over the last two weeks many of our Year 6 children have been participating in Bikeability sessions. These involve working with coaches from the Erewash Sports Partnership to learn how to ensure your bike is road worthy, having confidence when cycling and most importantly learning the rules for cycling on the roads. This is important as the children are preparing for the next stage of their education, by transferring to secondary school.

The coaches were great, full of enthusiasm. They were thrilled with our children's positive attitudes and impressed with how hard they worked during the whole course.

The children showed great control and listened carefully when out and about in our locality. You can see how hard they were concentrating in the photographs.

A huge thank you goes to the coaches, who were excellent.

  • World Book Day

    Thu 05 Mar 2015 J Menzies

World Book Day 5th March 2015.

We had lots of fun today reading and listening to stories. There was a book quiz for KS2 children and a competition for KS1 to design a book mark.

At lunch times this week all of the staff have been running story sessions, so that everyone could listen to new stories or even enjoy a favourite story from the past. It was wonderful to see the children's love of books.

After lunch the whole school had a readathon.

Don't forget to spend your vouchers, all of the local supermarkets have lots of books that you can enjoy.

In KS2, if your child reads regularly at home they can come along to my office and choose a book as a reward.

Reading is a lifelong skill, the more you read -  the better you get.

    So keep reading!

    J Menzies
