    Travel Smart Assembly

Rob Bounds (Senior Transport Officer for DCC) visited school ,on Friday 10th June, to tell all of the children about travelling safely to school. He lead a fantastic assembly, getting staff and children involved.

There were all sorts of weird and wonderful dinosaurs, from the Walkosarus Max, the Velocer-scooter, Pedalosaur, Carshare-alots, Trike-ceratops to the huge Busodon. You can imagine the amusement of the children.

Have a look at the pictures below.

It is Travel Smart Week from 13th - 17th June, so think about how you travel to school.

The ECO Committee ran a competition to show how you can travel to school being friendly to the environment. They judged all entries and winners were awarded a pack of jelly snakes (no artificial additives or colours).

The serious message, of course is, think how you travel and stay safe.

The Big Build - A New Challenge for Children at Longmoor Primary School

Mrs Menzies (Headteacher) and Mrs Wilson (EYFS Lead Teacher) at Longmoor Primary School in Long Eaton applied for a

National Lottery Grant of £10 000, to build a climbing challenge for the school's Reception children.

Just before May half term the building began. The weather was beautiful and the installation went smoothly. The children watched with great anticipation, as the separate sections went up.

With the holiday over, the children couldn't wait to try the challenges.  All aspects of children's physical development start with them understanding their bodies. Jumping, running, balancing and climbing have to be mastered before the fine motor skills of writing and cutting. The children at Longmoor now have even more opportunity to master these skills.

    What fun!

Mrs Menzies, Mrs Wilson and some of the children officially opened the climbing area, on the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations, on Friday 10th June.

  • Writing Conferences in Year 5 and 6.

Writing Conferences in Year 5 and 6

We have been working incredibly hard to help our children to improve their writing. One of the best ways is to have personalised writing conferences 1:1. This way the children can focus on what they need to include to up-level their work. It is very successful.

Have a read of the following piece of writing, I'm sure you'll be impressed.

'Tugging at the ice cold, metal lock on the gigantic steel door, the small, furry orang-utan attempted to make a break for freedom. Irritated and annoyed, all the other orang- utans screamed and shouted at him to stop all of the noise. On the outside he took no notice of them, (however on the inside he was paralysed with sadness that they were all yelling at him.) Some people were watching the orang- utan trying to break free; whilst others were watching the infuriated apes.'

Written by Nathan - Year 6

This piece of writing was inspired by a photograph.

  • The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations

    The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations

On Friday 10th June the whole school celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday, with a whole school garden party. We all ate out lunch outside, dressed in red, white and blue. The school was festooned with bunting and we all felt in a celebratory mood.

Mrs Chambers (our cook) and her team, made up lunch bags, provided chips and ice creams for everyone. It was wonderful until.................. you've guessed it, the heavens opened. It was torrential rain for the entire afternoon!

We are British, so it didn't spoil the event. We rushed inside and had our ice creams in the classrooms.

The afternoon was all about writing to the Queen and finishing off her birthday cards.Hopefully she will write back to us!

Thank you to all of the staff and parents who supported the event. It was fun.

  • Year 6 Residential

    Year 6 Residential

27 of our Year 6 pupils went on our residential trip to Whitehall, near Buxton in Derbyshire.

They were impeccably behaved as always, enjoying a range of activities from scream scrambling to kayaking. They had many challenges and by supporting each other, they pushed themselves to complete new experiences.

As always these activities can not take place without our fantastic staff. A huge 'thank you' goes to Miss Hurt for organising it and Mrs Allcock and Mis Kirk, who supported  over the 3 days.

Well done children, I am always impressed with your adventurous natures - life is all about taking opportunities when they come along.
