Our Reading books.
Welcome to our Read, Write Inc Phonics page. At Longmoor we use the Read Write Inc scheme to teach phonics. But what is phonics? Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language. Phonics involves matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. (https://literacytrust.org.uk/information/what-is-literacy/what-phonics/)
Watch the video below.
At Longmoor we start teaching children Read Write Inc in Nursery where the children are taught 1 sound a week. In Reception we teach all of the set 1 sounds and in Year 1 we teach the children set 2 and 3 sounds.
At the end of the Year 1, the children participate in the Phonics Screening Check. The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
