  • The National Quiz - Round 1.

    Sun 28 Feb 2016 J Menzies

The General Knowledge Inter-School Quiz  Championship 2015-2016.

Miss Hughes has been training a number of children for the National Quiz. One lunch time a week they have been practising and learning a host of new information. The team was eventually chosen  and Dylan, Jaime, Ruben and Kirsten had successfully gained a place.

On Thursday 25th February Miss Hughes, Mrs Menzies and several parents and a grandma drove to Gayton Primary School in Derby.

There were 12 teams and it was a hotly fought competition. At one point Longmoor were leading and our supporters were very vocal in their encouragement.

By the end Longmoor had 1325 points but the winner had 1930 point. This appears like a huge difference but some questions were worth 100 points, so actually we got very few questions wrong.

Fernwood Primary School were the winners and will now go through to the next round.

Well done to all of the teams, especially Longmoor who came 5th.

The finals this year will be held at the Houses of Parliament.

Well done to the whole team, I know that Kirsten would love to do it all over again.

  • Erewash Gymnastic Festival.

Sun 28 Feb 2016 Mr Roper

Year 3 and 4 Gymnastic Festival

On Tuesday the 9th of February 2016, Mr Roper and Miss Grainger took ten children from years 3 and 4 to represent our school at a Gymnastic Festival at Erewash Valley Gym Club. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn and develop gymnastic skills using equipment that they would not usually have access to at school.

The children practised their balancing (and bravery) skills on the beam, jump techniques on the bouncy castle runway, floor and routine skills on the tumble mat, jumps and landing skills from the trampoline, and finally, used their core strength on the bars to balance and hold themselves up to be able to do a somersault.

All the children worked incredibly hard and attempted each station, even if it was a little scary! A big well done to Ella, Mia, Page, Chloe, Millie, Jaydon, Amy, Alex and Zoey.

  • Partake Theatre Bring to Life the Great Fire of London

    Fri 26 Feb 2016 J Menzies

Partake Theatre Company Visit Year 1 and 2

On Tuesday 23rd February the Partake Theatre Company came to Longmoor to tell the tale of The Great Fire of London.

All of the children were inspired by the experience of dressing up and re-enacting the story.

This is a wonderful way to bring history to life and was enjoyed by all of the staff and children.

Working with outside groups adds an extra dimension to learning at Longmoor.

On Friday 5th February the PTFA held the school's annual Quiz Night.

It was a fabulous night enjoyed by all.

  • Phonic Screening Parent Information Meeting

    Wed 03 Feb 2016 J.Menzies

    Phonic Screening Parent Information Meeting.

On Wednesday 3rd February Mrs Lamb invited all of the Year 1 children's parents and some of the children in Year 2's parents to find out all about how the children are screened for their phonic knowledge.

Later this year, in June all children in Year 1 are asked to read 40 words so that we can find out about their ability to decode words. They have to read real words and 'alien' words, which can be tricky.

Mrs Lamb demonstrated how the screening works and then the children came down to the hall to work with their parents.

There were lots of words to read and parents were very impressed.

After the half term holiday every child that will sit the screening this year will be sent a pack of words to practise at home.

A huge 'thank you' goes to everyone that was able to attend.

Parents felt it was most informative and helpful in ensuring continuity of approach at home and school.

Keep practising those alien words - particularly those split digraphs!
